When to renew
Most corporations open the renewal window a month or two before expiry, and many set a hard deadline of 31 March where the licence runs on the financial year.
Renewing inside the window is straightforward. Renewing after expiry usually attracts a late fee, and after a longer lapse the corporation may require a fresh application with the full document set and an inspection.
What changes need declaring at renewal
- Change in the nature of the trade carried on
- Change in the built-up area or the layout of the premises
- Change in ownership or in the constitution of the business
- Change in the number of workers employed
- Installation of additional machinery or increased power load
- Any new prerequisite clearance now required for the activity
Renewal is often blocked by something else
Corporations commonly refuse renewal where property tax is outstanding on the premises, where a fire clearance has expired, or where a prior notice remains uncomplied with.
Checking those before applying saves a rejected application. Property tax arrears in particular are the most frequent blocker, and they are often the landlord’s rather than the occupier’s.
