FSSAI Licence Renewal
Renew a food licence ahead of expiry to avoid the penalty and the risk of trading uncovered.
An FSSAI licence or registration is issued for a term of one to five years and must be renewed before it expires. Renewal is not automatic and the authority does not reliably chase you for it.
Operating on an expired licence is treated as operating without one, which carries the same consequences as never having had it — including penalties and the risk of the premises being sealed.

The renewal window
An application should be filed before expiry. Where it is filed late, a penalty accrues for each day of delay, and beyond a certain period the licence cannot be renewed at all and a fresh application is required.
A fresh application means a new licence number, which then has to be reprinted on packaging and updated with every marketplace and customer. That downstream cost usually exceeds the renewal itself, which is why the date is worth diarising.
What to update at renewal
- Changes in the food products handled, which may alter the licence category
- Changes in the premises, layout or storage capacity
- Changes in the proprietor, partners or directors
- Turnover, where it has crossed the threshold into a higher licence tier
- The food safety supervisor, where the trained person has changed
- Any additional premises brought into use
Outstanding returns can block it
A manufacturer or importer with an unfiled annual return in Form D1 may find the renewal held up until it is filed. The two obligations are separate but the authority treats the record as a whole.
Checking that returns are current before applying avoids discovering the problem at the point where the licence is about to lapse.
Upgrading rather than renewing
Where turnover has crossed the threshold, renewing at the existing tier is not the right answer. A business above ₹12 lakh needs a State Licence rather than Basic Registration, and above ₹20 crore or across state lines a Central Licence.
Operating on a licence below your actual scale is a compliance breach even though the licence is valid, and renewal is the natural point to correct it.
How we handle it
- 1 Checking the expiry and tier We confirm the expiry date and whether turnover now requires a higher licence category rather than a straight renewal.
- 2 Checking returns Any outstanding annual return is identified and filed, since it can hold up the renewal.
- 3 Updating particulars Changes in products, premises, personnel or constitution are captured in the application.
- 4 Filing The renewal is filed on the FoSCoS portal with the government fee for the chosen term.
- 5 Inspection, if ordered Where the authority inspects, we prepare you for what will be examined.
- 6 Renewed licence The renewed licence is issued and the next expiry diarised.
Frequently asked questions
When should I renew?
Before expiry. Late applications attract a per-day penalty, and beyond a certain period renewal is not possible at all and a fresh application with a new licence number is required.
What if I get a new licence number?
It has to be reprinted on all packaging and updated with every marketplace and customer. That downstream cost usually exceeds the renewal fee, which is why the expiry date matters.
Can I renew at the same tier if my turnover has grown?
You should not. Crossing ₹12 lakh requires a State Licence and ₹20 crore or interstate operations a Central Licence. Operating below your actual scale is a breach even with a valid licence.
Why is my renewal held up?
Commonly an unfiled annual return in Form D1, for manufacturers and importers. The obligations are separate but the authority treats the record as a whole.
How long a term should I choose?
One to five years. A longer term costs more upfront in government fee but removes the annual renewal risk, which for most food businesses is worth it.
What is not included. Government fees, statutory charges, stamp duty, court and registry fees, digital signature costs and any third-party professional charges are separate and payable at actuals. GST applies on professional fees where indicated. Prices shown are indicative and may change without notice; we confirm the total in writing before any work begins — see our terms on pricing.
