Professional Tax Cancellation
Surrender a professional tax registration you no longer need and close the file cleanly.
A professional tax registration that is no longer needed does not lapse on its own. Until it is formally cancelled, returns remain due and late fees accrue against a business that may have stopped operating years earlier.
This is the most common way a closed business ends up with a live liability. The proprietor moves on, nobody files, and the default surfaces when they apply for a registration in their own name for something else.
What this costs
Karnataka
₹12,254 plus GST
- Filing of PTRC cancellation application
- Filing of PTEC cancellation application
- Department acknowledgement / closure confirmation
When cancellation is appropriate
- The business has ceased operations entirely
- The entity has been dissolved, struck off or wound up
- Employment has ended and PTRC is no longer required, though PTEC may continue
- Operations have moved to another state where the registration does not apply
- The business has been transferred and the transferee holds their own registration
- The proprietor has died and the business is not being continued
Clear the dues first
A cancellation application will not be processed while returns are outstanding or tax is unpaid. Every period up to the date of cessation must be filed and any tax, interest and late fee paid.
For a business that stopped some years ago, that clearing exercise is usually the bulk of the work and the bulk of the cost. It is still cheaper than leaving the registration live, because the late fee continues accruing regardless.
PTEC and PTRC cancel separately
They are two distinct registrations and cancelling one does not affect the other. A business that has released its employees but continues trading should cancel PTRC while keeping PTEC alive.
Cancelling both when the entity itself is closing is the usual position, but the two applications are made separately and each must be followed through.
How we handle it
- 1 Establishing the cessation date We fix the date operations or employment actually ceased, since every period up to it must be filed.
- 2 Quantifying the arrears Outstanding returns are identified and the tax, interest and late fee computed so you know the position before proceeding.
- 3 Clearing the backlog All pending returns are filed and dues paid, since the application will not otherwise be processed.
- 4 Filing the application The cancellation application is filed on the state portal with proof of cessation.
- 5 Following through Departmental queries are answered and the order pursued to conclusion.
- 6 Confirming closure We confirm the registration shows as cancelled, so nothing continues accruing against it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just stop filing?
No. The registration remains live and late fees accrue for every unfiled period. The default typically surfaces when you apply for some other registration and a clearance is required.
Do I have to clear old returns first?
Yes. A cancellation application is not processed while returns are outstanding or tax is unpaid. Clearing the backlog is usually the bulk of the work.
Does cancelling PTRC cancel PTEC?
No. They are separate registrations requiring separate applications. A business that has released employees but continues trading cancels PTRC and keeps PTEC.
What if the business closed years ago?
The returns can still be filed and the registration cancelled, with interest and late fee. It is worth regularising rather than leaving an open liability against your name.
What happens after cancellation?
No further returns are due from the effective date. We confirm the portal shows the registration as cancelled so nothing continues accruing.
What is not included. Government fees, statutory charges, stamp duty, court and registry fees, digital signature costs and any third-party professional charges are separate and payable at actuals. GST applies on professional fees where indicated. Prices shown are indicative and may change without notice; we confirm the total in writing before any work begins — see our terms on pricing.
