ISO Certificate Renewal
Surveillance audit and renewal to keep an existing ISO certificate valid for its next cycle.
An ISO certificate is typically valid for three years, and that validity is conditional. Surveillance audits during the cycle confirm the management system is still operating, and a recertification audit at the end of the three years is what carries it into the next cycle.
Certificates are suspended or withdrawn more often for missed surveillance audits than for system failures. The audit is a scheduled obligation, not an optional check-in, and a lapsed certificate causes real commercial damage when a customer asks for it.

The three-year cycle
- Initial certification following stage one and stage two audits
- First surveillance audit, roughly twelve months later
- Second surveillance audit, roughly twenty-four months later
- Recertification audit before the three-year expiry
- A new certificate issued for the next three-year cycle
What a recertification audit examines
Recertification is more thorough than a surveillance audit. The auditor reviews the whole system rather than sampling parts of it, and looks specifically at how it has performed over the cycle.
- Effectiveness of the management system as a whole over three years
- Internal audit records for the full period
- Management review minutes and the decisions taken
- Corrective actions closed out from earlier audits
- Progress against the objectives you set
- Changes in the organisation, scope, sites or processes
- Customer complaints and how they were handled
Letting it lapse is expensive
Where the recertification audit is not completed before expiry, the certificate lapses. Depending on how long the gap runs, the certification body may require a full initial certification rather than a recertification — which costs more and takes longer.
In the meantime you cannot claim certification, which matters where a tender or a customer contract requires it. Scheduling the audit two to three months before expiry avoids the whole problem.
Transferring between certification bodies
A certificate can be transferred from one accredited body to another, commonly on price or service grounds. The receiving body reviews your existing certificate, the audit reports and any open non-conformities before accepting the transfer.
A transfer from an unaccredited body to an accredited one is generally not a transfer at all — expect to go through initial certification.
How we handle it
- 1 Reviewing the cycle We check what has been maintained since the last audit and identify gaps before the auditor finds them.
- 2 Updating documentation Procedures are updated to reflect how the organisation actually works now, not how it worked three years ago.
- 3 Internal audit and review The internal audit and management review the standard requires are conducted and recorded.
- 4 Closing non-conformities Any open findings from earlier audits are addressed and closure evidenced.
- 5 Recertification audit The certification body audits and we support you through it.
- 6 New certificate The certificate is issued for the next cycle and the surveillance dates diarised.
Frequently asked questions
How long is an ISO certificate valid?
Usually three years, subject to surveillance audits at roughly twelve and twenty-four months. Missing a surveillance audit can lead to suspension or withdrawal before the three years are up.
What if my certificate has already expired?
Depending on how long the gap has run, the certification body may require full initial certification rather than recertification, which costs more and takes longer.
Can I change certification body at renewal?
Yes. A transfer between accredited bodies is permitted after the receiving body reviews your certificate, audit reports and open findings. Moving from an unaccredited body usually means starting afresh.
How is recertification different from surveillance?
Surveillance samples parts of the system. Recertification reviews the whole system and how it has performed across the three years, including internal audits and management reviews.
What if our processes have changed?
The documentation must be updated to reflect current practice. Auditors compare what you do against what your manual says, and a manual describing an obsolete process is itself a finding.
