Choosing the validity
Certificates are issued for one, two or three years. The per-year cost falls with the term, so a two or three-year certificate is more economical for anyone who files regularly.
The counterpoint is that a certificate is tied to a named individual. Where the authorised signatory is likely to change — a director who may resign, or an employee in the role — a shorter term avoids paying for validity that will be abandoned.
The token cannot be duplicated
The certificate is issued onto a FIPS-compliant USB cryptographic token, and the private key is generated inside it and cannot be exported. That is what makes the signature secure and non-repudiable.
It also means there is no backup. A lost or damaged token requires revocation and a fresh certificate for the remaining period, with no recovery and no refund of the unused term.
It is legally your signature
A certificate is issued to a named individual and signing with it is that person signing. Handing the token to someone else means they are signing in your name with your legal liability attached.
This is common practice in some offices and it should not be. Where more than one person needs to file, each should hold their own certificate.

Frequently asked questions
Is a two-year certificate different from a one-year one?
Only in term. The certificate and its capabilities are identical; the longer validity simply costs less per year and removes a renewal from your calendar.
Should I choose three years instead?
If the signatory is settled in the role, yes — it is the most economical. Where the authorised person may change, a shorter term avoids paying for validity that will be abandoned.
Can two people use one token?
No. The certificate is legally that individual’s signature. Sharing it means someone else signs in your name with your liability. Each filer should hold their own.
What if the token is lost?
The certificate must be revoked and a fresh one obtained for the remaining period. The key cannot be extracted from the token, so there is no recovery and no refund of unused validity.
Do I need to be present for verification?
Verification is completed by video along with mobile and email confirmation. It is done remotely and takes a few minutes.
