A barcode is the machine-readable number that identifies your product at a checkout, in a warehouse and on a marketplace listing. Retail chains and e-commerce platforms will not list a product without one, which makes it a practical precondition to organised retail rather than a legal requirement.
Barcodes in India are allocated by GS1 India, which issues the company prefix from which you generate a unique number for each product variant. Buying numbers from an unauthorised reseller is a false economy — retailers verify them against the GS1 registry.

The barcode types you are likely to need
- EAN-13 — the standard retail barcode used on consumer products worldwide
- EAN-8 — a shorter version for packaging too small for the full code
- ITF-14 — used on outer cartons and shipping cases
- GS1-128 — carries additional data such as batch numbers and expiry dates
- QR and DataMatrix — used where more information must be encoded, including for pharmaceuticals
One number per variant
A distinct barcode is required for every variant a customer could buy separately. A shampoo sold in three sizes needs three numbers, and a change in pack size requires a new one even where the product is identical.
Colour and flavour variants also need separate numbers. Underestimating the count is the most common error at application, because the allocation you buy determines how many products you can list.
How the fee works
GS1 charges a one-time registration fee plus an annual subscription, and both are graded by your company turnover and by the number of barcodes you require.
The allocation is a block of numbers, not individual barcodes. Choosing a block that leaves headroom for planned launches avoids a second application in a year.

Frequently asked questions
Is a barcode legally required?
No. It is a commercial requirement rather than a legal one. Retail chains and marketplaces will not list products without a valid barcode, so in practice it is unavoidable for organised retail.
How many barcodes do I need?
One for every separately purchasable variant. Different sizes, colours and flavours each need their own number, and a change in pack size requires a new one.
Can I buy barcodes from a reseller?
You can, but retailers verify numbers against the GS1 registry and resold numbers frequently fail that check. It is a false economy.
Do barcodes need renewal?
The GS1 subscription is annual. Letting it lapse means your numbers are no longer validly registered against your business, which can cause delisting.
Is my Indian barcode valid abroad?
Yes. GS1 numbers are globally unique and recognised internationally, so the same barcode works in export markets.
