The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority registers exporters of scheduled products — fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, dairy, processed foods, cereals and several others. Registration is compulsory before exporting anything on that schedule.
The certificate is the Registration-cum-Membership Certificate for the sector, and it is a precondition both to exporting scheduled products and to claiming the assistance schemes the authority administers.

Destination requirements sit on top
APEDA registration authorises you to export. It does not by itself satisfy the importing country’s requirements, which commonly include residue testing, packhouse registration, phytosanitary certification and facility approval.
The European Union, the United States and Japan each maintain their own conditions for particular commodities, and a consignment can be compliant in India and refused at the destination. Establishing the destination requirement before shipping is what prevents that.
Traceability
For several commodities the authority operates traceability systems requiring registration of the farm, the packhouse and the exporter, with each consignment traceable back to the producing plot.
Grapes, and horticultural produce for the European market generally, are the clearest examples. Exporters who register only at their own level and not upstream find themselves unable to ship in the season they planned for.

Frequently asked questions
Is APEDA registration compulsory?
Yes, for exporting products on the APEDA schedule. It is also a precondition to claiming the assistance schemes the authority administers.
Does it satisfy the importing country?
No. It authorises export from India. Residue testing, phytosanitary certification, packhouse registration and facility approval to the destination’s standards apply on top.
My product is not on the schedule. What then?
Registration would be with the Export Promotion Council covering that product category instead. We identify the correct body for what you actually export.
What is traceability registration?
For several commodities, farm and packhouse registration so each consignment can be traced to the producing plot. It is required for horticultural exports to Europe and takes time, so it should precede the season.
Do I need an FSSAI licence as well?
For food products, generally yes. FSSAI addresses food safety under Indian law; APEDA registration addresses export authorisation. They are separate requirements.
What is not included. Government fees, statutory charges, stamp duty, court and registry fees, digital signature costs and any third-party professional charges are separate and payable at actuals.
