Trademark Certificate & Watch Service
Obtain your registration certificate and keep watch on new filings that may conflict with your brand.
Once a mark is registered the registry issues a certificate, and from that point the proprietor carries the burden of watching for conflicts. Nobody notifies you when a similar mark is published, and the window to oppose it is four months.
A watch service exists because that burden is impractical to carry manually. The registry publishes a journal continuously, and the marks that matter to you are rarely identical to yours — they are similar enough to confuse a customer and different enough to miss on a text search.

Obtaining the certificate
- The certificate issues after the opposition period passes without a successful challenge
- It records the mark, the classes, the proprietor and the date of registration
- A hard copy can be obtained where a bank, marketplace or customer requires one
- Corrections to the recorded particulars are made by a separate application
- The registration runs ten years from the date of application, not from the certificate
What monitoring covers
- New applications in your classes and in classes related to your goods
- Phonetically and visually similar marks, not only identical ones
- Marks published in the journal, with the opposition deadline diarised
- Company and LLP names incorporating your brand
- Domain registrations resembling your mark
- Marketplace listings using your brand without authorisation
The four-month window is the whole point
Opposing a mark within four months of publication costs a fraction of what rectification costs after it registers, and far less than litigating against a user who has become established.
That window is the cheapest point of intervention in the whole system, and it is also the easiest to miss, because it opens and closes without anyone telling you.
Keep the evidence of use
A registration unused for five years and three months is vulnerable to removal by an aggrieved person. The defence is evidence of continuous use, not the certificate itself.
Dated invoices, packaging, advertising and turnover under the mark should be retained as a matter of course. Proprietors who maintain the registration but not the evidence are weaker than they believe.
How we handle it
- 1 Obtaining the certificate Where the certificate has not issued or a copy is needed, we obtain it from the registry.
- 2 Portfolio review We map what you hold against what you sell and identify classes where you are unprotected.
- 3 Configuring the watch Monitoring is set across your classes, related classes and phonetic variants.
- 4 Assessing alerts Where a conflicting application appears, we assess whether it genuinely threatens you before recommending action.
- 5 Acting in time Opposition or a notice is issued within the window while it remains the inexpensive remedy.
- 6 Renewal tracking Renewal dates are diarised so no registration lapses through inattention.
Frequently asked questions
Does the registry warn me about similar marks?
No. It publishes applications but notifies nobody. The burden of noticing sits entirely with the proprietor, which is what a watch service addresses.
When does my registration actually start?
Ten years from the date of application, not from the date the certificate issues. The renewal date is calculated from the application date.
Why oppose rather than deal with it later?
Because opposition within the four-month window costs a fraction of rectification afterwards, and far less than litigating against an established user.
Can I lose my registration by not using the mark?
Yes, after five years and three months of continuous non-use, on the application of an aggrieved person. Dated evidence of use is the defence.
Do I need a physical certificate?
The registration exists regardless, but banks, marketplaces and some customers ask for a copy. It can be obtained from the registry when needed.
