Logo Design

An original wordmark or symbol designed for your business and supplied in the formats a trademark filing needs.

A logo is the visual mark your business is recognised by. Its job is to be distinctive, legible at any size, and usable across everything from a signboard to an invoice to an app icon — which is a design problem before it is an artistic one.

It is also a legal asset. A logo that is distinctive can be registered as a trademark; one that merely describes what you sell often cannot. That constraint should shape the design from the outset rather than be discovered at the filing stage.

Designing for registrability

A trademark examiner will object to a mark that is descriptive, generic or common to the trade. A logo built around a literal depiction of the product, or around ordinary descriptive words, faces exactly that objection.

Distinctiveness is what makes a mark both memorable and registrable, and the two goals point the same way. We check the direction against the register before design work goes far, so you are not asked to abandon a logo you have grown attached to.

What you should receive

  • The primary logo in full colour
  • Monochrome and reversed versions, for single-colour printing and dark backgrounds
  • A horizontal and a stacked arrangement, for different spaces
  • A compact mark or icon, for app icons and social profiles
  • Vector source files, which scale without loss
  • Raster exports at the sizes you will actually use
  • Colour values in the formats print and screen each require
  • A short note on minimum size, clear space and what not to do

Insist on vector files

A logo supplied only as an image file cannot be enlarged for a signboard or a vehicle without degrading, and cannot be reliably colour-matched in print.

The vector source is the master. Businesses that hold only a low-resolution image commonly have to pay to have the logo redrawn when they first order signage, which is an avoidable cost.

Ownership must be written down

Work created by an independent designer belongs to the designer unless there is a written assignment. Paying for the work does not, by itself, transfer the copyright.

That assignment matters for the trademark application, for copyright registration, and for any later enforcement. We assign the rights to you in writing as part of the engagement rather than leaving it implied.

How we handle it

  1. 1 Brief We establish what the business is, who it speaks to, and where the logo has to work.
  2. 2 Registrability check The direction is checked against the trademark register before design work goes far, so a distinctive route is chosen.
  3. 3 Concepts Initial concepts are presented, each with a rationale rather than as decoration.
  4. 4 Refinement The chosen direction is refined through agreed rounds of revision.
  5. 5 Delivery Final files are delivered in vector and raster formats with colour values and usage notes.
  6. 6 Assignment and filing Copyright is assigned to you in writing, and we can file the trademark application on the finished mark.

Frequently asked questions

Do I own the logo once I pay for it?

Only if the copyright is assigned to you in writing. Work by an independent designer belongs to the designer by default, and payment alone does not transfer it. We assign it as part of the engagement.

Should I register the logo as a trademark?

If you intend to build a brand around it, yes. Copyright protects the artistic work; a trademark gives you exclusive rights to use it as a brand in your class of goods or services.

Why do I need vector files?

Because they scale without losing quality. A logo held only as an image file has to be redrawn when you first order signage or vehicle branding, which is an avoidable cost.

Can any logo be registered as a trademark?

No. A logo that is descriptive of the goods, generic, or common to the trade will face objection. This is why we check the direction against the register before the design is finalised.

How many revisions are included?

An agreed number of rounds on the selected concept, set out at the start so there is no ambiguity. Changing direction entirely after selection is treated as new work.

What is not included. Government fees, statutory charges, stamp duty, court and registry fees, digital signature costs and any third-party professional charges are separate and payable at actuals. GST applies on professional fees where indicated. Prices shown are indicative and may change without notice; we confirm the total in writing before any work begins — see our terms on pricing.
