Income Tax E-Filing
Pick the right return form, claim every deduction you qualify for, and file with a clear tax or refund summary.
Filing your income tax return is how you tell the department what you earned in a financial year and settle the difference between the tax already deducted and the tax actually due. Filing on time also preserves rights that quietly disappear otherwise — chiefly the ability to carry forward losses and to claim a refund without friction.
The form you file on matters as much as the numbers. Using the wrong return can render the filing defective under Section 139(9), which restarts the clock and can push you past the deadline.

- ITR-3 — individuals and HUFs with business or professional income and books of account
- ITR-4 — presumptive income under Sections 44AD, 44ADA or 44AE
- ITR-5 — partnership firms, LLPs and associations of persons
- ITR-6 — companies other than those claiming exemption under Section 11
- ITR-7 — trusts, institutions and bodies claiming exemption
Old regime or new regime
The new tax regime is now the default. It offers wider slabs at lower rates but strips out most deductions and exemptions, including 80C, 80D, HRA and the interest deduction on a self-occupied house.
Which one leaves you better off depends entirely on how much you actually claim. A salaried person with a home loan, insurance and a full 80C is often better off in the old regime; someone with few deductions is usually better off in the new. We compute both and file on whichever produces the lower liability, rather than assuming.
What filing late actually costs
- Late filing fee under Section 234F, up to ₹5,000 depending on income
- Interest under Section 234A on tax outstanding, from the due date
- Business and capital losses cannot be carried forward if the return is late
- Refunds are delayed, and interest on the refund is reduced
- A belated return can still be filed, but within the window the Act allows
How we handle it
- 1 Collecting your particulars We gather your income documents and pull Form 26AS and the annual information statement from the portal.
- 2 Reconciling with department records Your figures are matched against what the department already holds, so nothing is missed and nothing is double counted.
- 3 Comparing both regimes Liability is computed under the old and the new regime and you are shown the difference before anything is filed.
- 4 Preparing the return The correct form is prepared with deductions claimed and the tax or refund position stated clearly.
- 5 Your approval and filing You review the computation, and only then is the return filed.
- 6 E-verification The return is e-verified, without which the filing is not treated as complete.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to file if tax has already been deducted?
Usually yes. TDS is not a substitute for filing. If your total income exceeds the basic exemption limit you must file, and it is often the only way to recover excess tax deducted.
What happens if I miss the deadline?
You can still file a belated return within the window the Act allows, with a fee under Section 234F and interest under 234A. The real cost is losing the right to carry forward business and capital losses.
Which regime should I choose?
It depends on your deductions. We compute both and file on the better one. The choice can be revisited each year for salaried taxpayers; those with business income have less flexibility.
Is e-verification really necessary?
Yes. An unverified return is treated as never filed. Verification is done through Aadhaar OTP, net banking or a bank account, and must be completed within the prescribed period.
Can a mistake be corrected after filing?
Yes, by filing a revised return within the time allowed. It is far better than waiting for the department to raise a notice.
