ITR-1 Filing (Salaried Individuals)
For salaried taxpayers with one house property and interest income — computed, cross-checked and e-verified.
ITR-1, also called Sahaj, is the simplest return form and is meant for resident individuals with straightforward income — salary or pension, one house property, and interest or other modest income. For most salaried people with no investments beyond bank deposits, this is the correct form.
The simplicity is the point, but it comes with strict eligibility limits. Filing on ITR-1 when you were not eligible makes the return defective, and the department will ask you to file again on the correct form.

Do not stop at filing
A return that is filed but not verified is treated as never filed. Verification is completed through Aadhaar one-time password, net banking or a pre-validated bank account, and must be done within the period allowed.
It is also worth checking Form 26AS and the annual information statement before filing. The department already knows about your interest income, your share transactions and your large payments, and a return that does not match generates an automated query.
How we handle it
- 1 Gathering documents We collect your Form 16 and interest certificates and pull your 26AS and annual information statement.
- 2 Confirming eligibility We check you actually qualify for ITR-1, since using the wrong form makes the return defective.
- 3 Comparing regimes Liability is computed under both the old and new regimes and the better outcome identified.
- 4 Preparing the return The return is prepared with deductions claimed and the refund or payable position shown clearly.
- 5 Filing and verification After your approval the return is filed and e-verified, and the acknowledgement sent to you.
Frequently asked questions
Can I file ITR-1 if I sold shares this year?
Only within the limited capital gains exemption the form now allows. Beyond that you need ITR-2. Using ITR-1 wrongly makes the return defective.
I have two house properties. Can I still use ITR-1?
No. ITR-1 covers one house property only. With two or more, ITR-2 is the correct form.
Do I need to file if my employer already deducted TDS?
Usually yes, if your income exceeds the basic exemption limit. Filing is also how you recover excess tax deducted.
What if I forgot a deduction after filing?
File a revised return within the time allowed. There is no penalty for revising, and it is much better than leaving a claim unmade.
How soon should I verify?
Immediately. An unverified return is treated as never filed, and people do lose the benefit of a timely filing this way.
